New Zealand

Building on a reputation for consistent quality whites, so the reds sparkle. Is this a true home of the fickle pinot noir?

Australia

Our big area for top-quality reds. Good mature selection, and the prices compared to say, Bordeaux, are affordable.

South Africa

A few class growers.

North America

Here I've lumped California and Washington State.

Argentina

Fourth largest world producer, and trying hard in the UK (see the whites too). Always worth trying. Malbec is the top grape.

Chile

Mature wine country now. The cheaper stuff is pleasant enough, but move up a notch, and it's very interesting.

Italy

Massive. Ignored the ordinary wines, and gone for the innovative growers. Listed North through to the South.

Spain

Still THE MOST INTERESTING wine country. Listed, Rioja, then Ribero del Duero, then the other areas.

Portugal

Perversely it's the expensive ones that really sell well.

India

Actually good.

France

On the back foot these days, and they are going varietal, like the Aussies. Still home to the greatest of all wines. And the Rhône still shines for me.
